Washington State Department of Health has created a notification system for people who may have been exposed to a person who has contracted the COVID-19 virus. This notification system, WA Notify, is a free app available through the Apple Store and Google Play for use for iPhone and Android. The app is available for free on the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store. Washington state DOH has released WA Notify, an app that can help alert you when you are in close proximity to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19. COVID-19 is the virus known to cause the pandemic.

Features

WA Notify provides a Code of Random Numbers to the other person's phone. This Code of Random Numbers is a way for the two phones to communicate without revealing the user's identity. If the other person has contracted COVID-19, the user who received the Code of Random Numbers will be notified that they may have been in close contact to a person who has contracted COVID-19. The app alerts you when you are in close proximity to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19. It uses the Exposure Notification framework that is used to send information about COVID-19 to devices. The app alerts you when you are within 6 feet of someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 for more than 15 minutes.

Design

WA Notify is a free app for use on iPhones and Android devices. The WA Notify app is a free app available to download through the Apple Store and Google Play. WA Notify is a simple, easy to use app. The interface is based on the iOS 7 design. The app logo is the D in WA Notify with an orange triangle in it, which signifies COVID-19. It does not need to know where you are or who you are to work. It also does not link any personal data with the random codes exchanged by devices.

Usability

This app is compatible with iPhone and Android devices. The app is designed to be used by people who may have been exposed to COVID-19, or who were near someone who has COVID-19.

Conclusion

Washington state DOH has developed the WA Notify app for Apple and Google devices to help warn people who may have had contact with someone with a positive COVID-19 diagnosis. When someone with a COVID-19 diagnosis shares their lab results through WA Notify, the app notifies nearby devices that they may have been exposed to COVID-19. COVID-19 is a condition that can be deadly for pregnant women and their babies.

Pros:
  • WA Notify allows you to protect your family, friends, neighbors, and colleagues,
  • Help protect Washington state from the COVID-19 pandemic
Cons:
  • The app may seem a bit unnecessary because it does not really do anything other than notify you that you may have been exposed to COVID-19
  • It also does not show you where you were when you were in close proximity to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19
  • It requires the operating system installed
